    Decorated Mailbox Cover

Artist and designer Sheila Rauen of Deka/Decart Inc. introduces Deka® Acrylic Sign Enamel Paints, which she uses to embellish plain decorative items. This paint is extremely durable and holds up well in any kind of weather. Sheila tackles a plain canvas mailbox cover, onto which she transfers a pattern and then paints the design with this long-lasting enamel.

    Materials:

Deka Acrylic Sign Enamel Paints (for indoor and outdoor use) in desired colors
Canvas mailbox cover or other accessories from BagWorks Brushes--assorted flats and rounds from Loew-Cornell
Pencil and paper to make pattern
    Graphite or other transfer paper
Masking tape to hold pattern in place while transferring
Sponges or stencils may be used if desired

    1. Decide on a design and draw a pattern that will fit on the mailbox cover or other project.

    2. Iron the mailbox cover to eliminate any folds.

    3. Place transfer paper face-down over the mailbox cover. Tape the pattern in position over the transfer paper.

    4. Trace the design onto the canvas.

    5. Stir the paint well before beginning. Paint the design onto the fabric, avoiding a heavy buildup of paint.

    6. For best results, allow the paint to cure for a day or two before using the finished piece.

    7. Tie the cover onto the mailbox with the attached ties (figure A).

    Tips:

    • Coloring books and seed catalogs are good sources of design inspiration for outdoor projects.

    • Acrylic Sign Enamel is a durable, fade-resistant indoor/outdoor paint that allows you to paint color next to color without the worry of their bleeding together.

    • For best results, avoid a thick buildup of paint.
