    Figure B

DIY Tools and Techniques host Carl Mueller demonstrates easy chair-seat reupholstery.

    Materials: Chair
    Fabric
    Batting
    1 3/4" foam
    Upholstery knife
    Staple gun and staples
    Screwdrive and screws

    1. Remove seat and old fabric before checking the base. Old foam that appears dry or powdery should be discarded.

    2. Next, cut a new piece of foam 1/2" larger than the bottom (figure A).

    3. Cut batting 4" larger than bottom of chair seat.

    4. Center foam on top of batting, then place the top of chair seat, centered face down, on top of the foam.

    5. Pull batting up and over the bottom of chair seat on the center of one side, stapling once. Repeat on other two sides, continuing to pull batting firmly, and staple around the base of the seat (figure B). Cut away excess batting.

    6. Center upholstered seat over the fabric. Be sure to center the seat over any major design element on the fabric. Repeat pulling and stapling process to secure the fabric.

    7. Finally, place the seat right side up on the chair. Flip chair and seat over and screw seat into place through the chair's frame.
