Cover an old chair with sheets or a matelassé coverlet for an inexpensive alternative to custom-made slipcovers. Matelassé, a French puff-quilted fabric, gives a slipcover a very soft look, perfect for shabby chic. Materials:
Chair Sheets or matelassé coverlet European pillow sham to match sheets or coverlet Upholstery twist pins Upholstery U pins Drapery-rod cord Tassels Decorative pillows - Measure your chair to determine what size coverlet you need. Our chair required a queen-size coverlet.
- Remove the seat cushion, drape the coverlet over the chair, and start tucking. Tuck the fabric deep into all crevices (figure A).
- Use upholsterer's twist pins (figure B) to keep the fabric in place. Just twist them through the fabric and into the chair (figure C) to secure the coverlet.
- Tuck the seat cushion into a European pillow sham (figure D). Our pillow sham had a scalloped edge, which we left showing.
- Use drapery cord tied around to the back of the chair to hold the fabric snugly to the arms (figure E). Hold the cord in place with U-shaped upholsterer's pins (figure F).
- Add a big tassel at the end of each chair arm (figure G)) and decorative pillows for a finishing touch (figure H).
