  • Denne Master Bedroom: Canopy
  • From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-203

The Dennes needed a place to relax and escape the everyday pressures of raising five children. With the help of the Material Girls, Kelly Keener, April Eden and Cat Wei, this couple start turning their bland bedroom into a tranquil retreat: first they paint the walls a soft purple; then April teaches Dianna Denne how to sew a floating canopy to hang over their bed.

    Materials:

fabric (we used Waverly #649101, Isle of Palm Dune)
    scissors
    sewing machine
    measuring tape
    plate/saucer
    needle/thread
    iron
    rods
    hooks

    1. Begin by taking the measurements of the bed and the wall. From these measurements decide how big you want the canopy to be. Cut the fabric double this measurement so that it will self-line. Cut three pieces the desired length of the canopy and two smaller pieces that will act as the valance for the front edge.

    2. To make the scalloped valance, start by pinning the material right sides together. Next use a plate or saucer, depending on how big you want the scallops to be. Lay half of the plate on the bottom edge of the fabric and trace around it. Cut accordingly.

    3. Sew the top and sides of the valance, leaving enough space to turn it right side out. Now slowly sew around the scalloped edge. Clip the seam in several places to make a smooth-looking scallop. Turn the fabric right side out, hand-stitch shut and press.

    4. Pin the valance to one side of the canopy material and sew in place. Now pin the self-lining canopy pieces together and sew, remembering to leave enough open on each end for the rod pockets. Turn the fabric right side out. Hand-stitch two lines for each rod pocket.

    5. To attach the canopy to the ceiling, start by placing four hooks: two near the headboard and two 2' out from the headboard. Insert the rods into the rod pockets and place the rods on the hooks.
