Heirlooms and nurseries aren't necessarily incompatible: jus ask host Bea Pila. In this episode she creates a space with a traditional elegance that will work equally well for a baby or an older child. The room starts off as a typical nursery: small, with few distinguishing features (figure A). Pila's first step is to liven it up with a red-and-white toile paper on the walls. (Toile, which is generally tone-on-tone, traditionally describes a scenic view and should be used in large scale, as will be done in this room). Finding the paper's white background to be too strong, Pila applies an oil-based glazing stain over the entire surface to soften the look (figure B). She suggests wearing gloves when working with glazing stains. The stain should be applied with a rag and rubbed until all the strokes have disappeared (although the look of "brushstrokes" is a viable alternative). The room's appearance is also greatly improved by the addition of crown molding and teardrop corner molding (figure C). For the bedding Pila has chosen a print that echoes the toile's color scheme while also featuring a few additional colors. The print, of animals dressed in period clothing, coordinates but doesn't compete with the toile while underscoring the heirloom theme (figure D).
