Nancy Elyze Brier, a representative of the Waverly home-furnishings company, explains how she chose fabrics to complement the bedroom's new color scheme. Companies such as Waverly make home decorating much easier by coordinating fabrics and other elements, thus saving the customer the time-consuming task of hunting fabrics, wall coverings, etc., than go together.

The statement print (figure A) is the fabric that contains all the colors that will be used in a project -- but the fabric itself doesn't have to be used in large amounts. In fact, the linen-cotton-blend statement fabric chosen for this room is used only for window panels and a few accent pillows (figure B).

Added to the statement fabric are accent fabrics: a mini-check in beige, off-white and coral; a reversible jacquard; an ecru brocade; an off-white matelasse; a bold stripe; and a vivid brick-red grid pattern. The mini-check, jacquard, brocade, stripe and brick grid are used for accent pillows (the brocade is also used for the bedskirt); the matelasse, for the duvet and the loveseat slipcover (figure C). The designers kept in mind throughout the entire process that two people will be using the bedroom, so the fabrics must appeal to the husband as well as the wife.

Note: For your next redecorating project, whether you're doing it yourself or calling in a decorator, here's a tip to help you pinpoint your preferences: Buy magazines and tear out the pictures that appeal to you. Sometimes it's hard to express precisely what you like, so a picture file can be an invaluable way to decide how you want your surroundings to look. You will see a trend emerge as you begin to discover what you like and dislike. Also remember to look in your closet: the colors you like to wear tend to be the colors with which you'll want to surround yourself.

The Bare Facts: Did you know that curtains have been around for only about 300 years?
