Materials: A set of white or light-colored sheets
Plastic plates
Knife
Potatoes
Carrots
Cucumbers
Star fruit
Toothpicks
Fabric paint or acrylic paint
Newspaper or large trash bags
Cutting board
Paper towels
Biscuit cutters
Brushes
Water
Pencil
- If your sheets are new, you will want to wash them first.
- Make sure you cover your work surface with trash bags or newspapers to protect it in case the paint should bleed through. Spread out sheets.
- Have an adult help you cut a potato in half lengthwise. Cut your design from halved potatoes using a biscuit cutter and knife (figure A). Simple shapes will work best. Stick the sides of the potatoes with toothpicks for handles. Try using other fruits and vegetables for easy shapes (figure B).
- Squirt a thin layer of paint in plastic plates. Lightly tap your "stamp" in the paint to load it up (figure C). If it is really loaded, blot it on paper towels so your design will be crisp and clear, or you can use a paintbrush to apply paint to the stamps.
- Now, stamp away -- cover the entire sheet with designs. Try pencil erasers for perfect little circles like confetti (figure D).
- Let your sheets dry up to 72 hours, or according to the paint manufacturer's instructions, before washing.
Tips: - Wash painted sheets separately the first time.
- Paint may fade slightly when washed, but that is normal.
- Always have an adult help you use any sharp objects like a knife.
