Nancy Golden shows off some of the recycled treasures that helped the guest room achieve its air of shabby chic. The dressing table was an inexpensive purchase that was painted white and fitted with new hardware. On the wall above it, a lovely mirror with a carved frame is crowned by a selection of painted-tin panels and medallions (figure A), and on top of the dressing table are a variety of decorative objects (figure B): - A box with drawers for handy storage of small items
- An old china creamer and saucer filled with potpourri
- metal birds found at various thrift shops, antiques stores, etc.;
- A silver lamp with a beaded shade.
In the bed area, in order not to detract from the stenciled garden gate, Golden has opted to use the print fabric sparingly. Her choice for the bedspread -- a matelasse coverlet -- is accented by a floral bedskirt, throw and pillows, as well as one dressy pillow for a bit of elegance. The bedside tables are actually unmatched metal garden tables, topped with lamps that have been given new shades (figure C). Accessories include an arrangement of broken ceramic fruit (chosen for no other reason than its pleasing look) and a glass apple; candles; crystal-and-glass candleholders; and tin boxes for storage. Using five framed prints (three bird prints and two watercolor landscapes), a porcelain plate and a couple more of the tin medallions, Golden created an art wall. Along the same wall she added a touch of whimsy with a potted plant sitting in the seat of a child's chair. Between the "shuttered" windows, the narrow space is accented with a weathered birdhouse and an ivory-painted birdcage. One window features a tin window box -- inside the room -- blooming with a selection of silk plants (figure D). The delicate lace curtains are began life as a pair of tablecloths. The Bare Facts: The term "shabby chic" refers to taking something old and using it in a stylish way.
