Vicki Payne, host of the PBS series Stained Glass With Vicki Payne, demonstrates a simple way to transform any glass light fixture into a beautiful Tiffany-style lamp. She covers an ordinary glass lampshade with a glass mosaic pattern, then transfers this technique to another clear shade. Materials:
Etched-glass shade or dome as a base for the mosaic lamp Mosaic glass glue Black mosaic glass grout (available from craft shops, home-improvement centers and glass retailers--do not use tile grout) Mosaic grout sealer Assortment of colorful art glass Small brush Hardware assembly for hanging or displaying shade Stick & StayB. adhesive Mosaic glass cutter General glass-cutting equipment Safety glasses
- Select or purchase a glass dome or shade to be decorated with mosaics. These are often available from retailers of stained glass.
- Create a design on paper, making several copies. Cut the shapes apart, and using the adhesive, arrange the pattern of the pieces on the inside of the glass dome ( figure A). Coloring books are great sources of designs. Coordinate the colors of the glass with your home decor.
- Cut the pieces of glass, using a mosaic cutter or a standard glass cutter. Keep the pieces small. Use terra-cotta saucers to hold the pieces. Cut random shapes as well as some squares and triangles (figure B).
- Apply the mosaic glass glue to a small section of the globe at a time, and arrange your glass pieces (figure C).
- Mix the grout according to package instructions.
- Use a small brush to apply the grout to the shade. Hold the shade up to the light, and make sure you've filled all the gaps between the mosaic pieces.
- With a damp sponge, clean the excess grout from the shade.
- After the grout has dried, apply mosaic sealer.
Etched glass provides a slightly rough surface that is better for adhesion.
Thin the glue with water, and reapply with a brush if it dries out. White glass grout can be tinted with colored paint.
