  • DIY Women: Angel Partin

  • PHOTO
When Angel Partin walks onto a job site, the men at work might jokingly refer to her as "The Boss," but they know that it's Partin who keeps the job on schedule and on budget.

Partin, who was raised around construction, says gaining respect has been easier because of her willingness to get grimy and grab a tool whenever necessary.

    (Angel's story is continued below.)

Angel Partin: From HR to hammers.
"Many times I've had to pick up a hammer and help frame a building, operate heavy equipment, finish drywall, paint or even lay sod."

And it's that fearless, do-it-yourself attitude that keeps Partin coming back for more. She once found herself unfulfilled by a job in human resources before deciding to trade her office attire for a hard hat and steel-toed boots.

As a field manager, Partin must totally run the construction site (she recently managed the construction of a metal-fabrication shop and a 32,000 square foot luxury home). She does everything from working with sub-contractors, codes officials and inspectors to dealing with clients -- and that's all before lunch!

"As a beginner, I got a lot of strange looks, a lot of 'what's she doing here?' But once I demonstrated that I had the knowledge base and was willing to do anything to get the job done, I earned respect. I'm often told that women are more detail-oriented and thorough, and that makes others want to work with me."

With her can-do attitude and tackle-anything sensibility, we're proud to feature Angel Partin as one of our DIY Women.

Angel Partin's Do-It-Yourself Tip: "When intimidated by a bigger job -- for example, plumbing or electrical work -- just break the job down segment-by-segment as you tackle it. And remember, although it may take longer, there's always a right way and a wrong way -- and you should do it right the first time."
