Tastes of Sunset is a grand event sponsored by Sunset magazine that brings in culinary experts from all over the world to the Long Beach Convention Center in Southern California. Party at Home host Heidi Bohay takes us on a brief tour to discover a feast of flavor in the endless variety of specialty foods, fresh produce, sauces & seasonings, and international dishes. This is one of the most enjoyable places where you can sample the food and drink that professionals serve at their own parties.

Whenever you consider the important elements of creating a successful party, the number one choice you make concerns the food and beverages that you serve to your guests. Anthony Zolezzi, promoter of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Cookbook, tells Bohay that shrimp is the perfect party food, whether the occasion is an elegant soiree or a more casual affair. His favorite party recipe is shrimp cocktail. The only preparation involved is boiling the shrimp with the tails on and adding a hot and spicy cocktail sauce to complement this particular fruit of the sea. Shrimp is low in fat -- less than 3/10 of a gram -- and is sure to be a pleasing addition to any social gathering.

Another healthy party treat is Terra Chips, the 1992 winner for the best party hors d'oeuvre. Representative Jack Acree explains that these healthy chips are made from an assortment of six all-natural vegetable roots grown throughout the South Pacific and Caribbean. The ruby taro root, for example, is flavored with beet juice to give the chip its deep red color and its subtle sweet flavor. Acree claims that these particular roots are actually eaten more than potatoes, but regardless of this fact, Terra Chips are great for entertaining since they are not salty and contain half the fat of regular potato chips or tortilla chips.

When it comes to seasonings, Tom Reed of Garlic Festival Foods in Gilroy, California, strongly advocates the use of garlic in absolutely everything, excluding dessert. Not only is garlic an excellent tonic for the immune system, but it also adds a fine flavor to all your favorite recipes. Reed says their motto is "Eat, Drink, and Stink!" and all garlic aficionados can connect with other like-minded individuals at 1-800-4GARLIC (442-7542).
