Baby cockatiels hatch after 18 to 21 days.

Cockatiel breeder Dick Remieres demonstrates the loving side of these charming birds and shares several tips for raising a healthy and happy pet.

    Maintenance

    • Feed once a day.

    • Change water twice a day.

    • Birdseed with raisins or vegetables is a real treat.

    • Pellet food may also be used.

    Personality Traits

    • Cockatiels are very affectionate; they like to be petted and let out of their cages.

    • Because males are aggressive, females make better pets.

    • They are very clean and spend a lot of time grooming themselves.

    • Cockatiels can learn to speak small words or phrases. Use tapes or patient repetition to teach them.

Tip: If you decide to breed and train cockatiels, be sure to start hand-feeding the babies at around two to three weeks. This helps them develop a good temperament and gets them used to being handled.

Note: The average life expectancy of a cockatiel is five years, but they can live as long as 30 years!
