Because the nursery is so small, the traffic flow naturally wraps around the perimeter (figure A). Pila decides that the three areas of the room -- the seating area, the sleeping area and the changing area -- need to make a statement. So she chooses three pieces of furniture:
- A white country-style rocking chair
- A white crib (which she centers along the main wall)
- An heirloom dresser, with its original dark finish -- to serve as a changing station (figure B).
The room has only one window, and it's the focal point of the wall in which it's located. Since it occupies so much of the wall space -- almost to the floor -- Pila decides not to put anything in front of it. And she opts for a bold window treatment: exterior shutters, painted white and hinged to the outside of the casings, and featuring star-shaped cutouts (figure C). Open or shut, they add a real outdoor feel to the room.
