Creative window treatments can bring charm to a room, add sparkle and show off your creative talents. DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden explains how to turn a small, nondescript window into the focal point of a room.

Disguise a small window by faking it. Take an area that's small and unimportant and make it big and beautiful. A successful window treatment can make a small window appear large, adding visual weight and balance to a wall and the dramatic illusion of height to a room.

Window scarves layered over drapery panels and soft sheers make an unimpressive 2' by 3' window appear to be as big as the wall. Window scarves, designed to be draped over a rod, are an easy no-sew accessory available in a wide variety of styles.

A rich-looking window scarf edged with bullion fringe is topped by a colorful plaid window scarf (figure A). The plaid gives a punch of color that draws the eye upward. Hanging beautiful layers of fabric from a decorative drapery rod with a strong finial (figure B) near the crown molding raises the height and scale of the window for a strong, elegant look. A pair of gorgeous tasseled tiebacks adds the perfect finishing touch (figure C).
