Golden wants the focal point of the room to be the room itself, not its outlets (such as a sliding door and a kitchen window), so she constructs a shutter and a door casing to cover these unsightly features. - To construct a shutter for the kitchen window, first wallpaper both sides of the small plywood sheet.
- Attach lattice to plywood pieces with nail gun.
- The corners of the lattice strip were butted together (figure A) to create angles instead of using a miter box.
- Attach a 1x2 to the lattice strip with small door hinges (figure B) and attach to window frame.
- To create a screen for the sliding glass door, measure the width and length of the door, adding 1-1/2" to both measurements.
- Using a store-bought door casing, miter the corners of the casing and attach with L brackets (figure C).
- Staple ready-made bamboo blind to door casing (figure D). Make sure the staples are long enough to penetrate the material and the wood. Work in small sections and pull the material tight to prevent snags.
- To add color to the remaining windows, Golden attaches store-bought dowel rods and muslin tab panel curtains to each window. She also ties knots in the bottom of the curtain length for design element and weight.
