The windows in the living room posed a bit of a quandary: they didn't match. One had a number of small panes, while the other was divided into horizontal sections. To add to that problem, they were previously swathed in yards of heavy blue fabric (figure A), which gave the room the feel of a cave. Golden decided to cover the windows softly with sheer fabric that could be pulled aside or not, as the homeowners wished. She purchased ready-made sheer panels, had them fitted with custom-made valances and ties (two coordinating prints on the cream-colored sheers) and hung them from a gold-colored drapery rod with faceted glass finials (figure B). Because the room was on the main floor of the house, the owners wished to have a measure of privacy. A totally dark room wasn't a requirement, however; if it had been, the owners could have used roller shades or pleated shades for varying degrees of privacy. Golden did suggest a couple of options for pulling the panels aside: a pair of metal-floral holdbacks over which the fabric could be drapes, and a pair of braided-fabric tiebacks that could be gathered around the panels and hung on simple cuphooks screwed into the windowframe. The Bare Facts: Add shades or blinds to your windows for more coverage at night.
