    Figure B

The bedroom was located on the main floor of the house -- and it contained lots of windows. The result: no privacy. So Nancy Golden hung natural-wood matchstick blinds in all the windows both to provide privacy and to keep the eye moving around the room. She hung the blinds inside the window casings so that the white mullions of the casings would act as a separation between the dark of the walls and the light of the windows.

Note: When you buy blinds or shades, you may notice either of the notations IB or OB on the price sticker. IB designates inside bracket; OB, outside bracket. These are measurements that refer to whether the blinds are hung inside or outside the window frame.

    Hardware

The bedroom featured built-in cabinets with very undistinguished wood-block handles (figure A). Golden replaced them with subtly shaded knobs whose design was reminiscent of Bakelite jewelry; the shadings in the knobs somewhat resembled that of the blinds and the rocks in the wall (figure B). (Note: When you remove old cabinet hardware, be aware that the screws may be longer than those provided with the replacements. If you need to buy new screws, take the old ones to the hardware store and get screws the same length so you can be sure they'll fit the cabinets.)
