Need a change of scenery? Decorator Sue Pelley offers ideas to vary the look of a room by using coordinating fabrics in colors and prints that echo the seasons. Make seasonal changes a snap with window treatments attached with Velcro®, and make easy-change table-toppers of reversible fabric for spring through summer and fall through winter. Arrange furniture to reflect the season by grouping chairs closer to the fireplace in fall and winter and making windows the focal point during the warm months.

Spring: Make a window treatment and a table-topper in a soft blue-tinted spring floral (figure A). Add a throw pillow in a stripe that coordinates with the floral, and use accessories that reflect the rebirth symbolized by spring.

Summer: Keep the same soft color scheme, but let yellow be the focal color in a balloon valance with pencil pleating along the top, hung over pleated shades to help filter the sunlight (figure B). Reverse the table-topper to the summer fabric, and use it over the same blue tablecloth that you used in the spring. Table accessories can remain the same.

Autumn: The deep, warm hues and more tailored lines of a hobbled Roman valance are perfect for autumn (figure C). Pick up the valance's print with a throw pillow of the same fabric. Use a large print on the table, and accessorize with a heavier, darker-hued lamp and seasonal design details such as gourds and pumpkins (figure D).

Winter: Change to a box-pleated valance in still darker colors (figure E). Reverse the autumn table-topper to a heavy stripe in colors that coordinate with the valance print, and use the same stripe for the pillow, which is trimmed with heavy cording around the edges.
