In Nancy Golden's hands the dining room has become a neoclassical showplace, a combination of formal, traditional touches and rustic accents. Among the accessories she has added to emphasize the look are the following:

    • A highly polished table topped with bamboo runners (figure A)

    • Fine monogrammed china combined with rattan chargers

    • Leopard-print napkins wrapped around silverware and tied with thick blades of grass

    • A centerpiece of green plants in a black-and-gold ceramic urn flanked by striped candles in tortoiseshell candleholders and decorative brass birds

    • The dull-brass chandelier, its arms topped with shades of amber beads (figure B)

    • Chairs slipcovered in monogrammed matelasse (figure C)

    • An area rug of inexpensive, sturdy sisal

    • A buffet decorated with a variety of crystal and silver decanters, the crystal-trimmed lamps and a small spotted camel figurine (figure D)

    • Plants -- ranging from a palm tree to a bunch of dried twigs, all in inexpensive containers -- placed in the corners to add height and to underscore the theme.
