A lovely paper lantern, which doesn't even need to be lighted in order to be attractive and impressive, hangs above the dining-room table (figure A), reflected in a huge mirror above the sideboard (which provides much-needed height in the area). Instead of choosing a pair of hard-edged accent lights, Berkus shows the paper-shaded buffet lamps that he chose to echo the ceiling fixture's softness (figure B). In the bookcase, the homeowners' book collection has been covered in white paper for a sense of unity, while a scattering a colorful silk pillows adds visual punch to the main seating area. Underfoot, a white shaggy rug defines the area, and along the low wall are bright paintings by local artists (figure C). A massive chain painting dominates one wall (figure D), and a selection of red silk flowers visually warms the coffee table in the seating area.
