Being a good party guest takes more than showing up with a bottle of wine. DIY Family Entertaining host Belma Johnson shares some suggestions for the perfect visitor.

It's a privilege to be a guest. Here's how to be a good one: - RSVP to your host in a timely manner.
- On the day of the party, call ahead to ask whether you can bring anything. (Note: Even if the host says everything is covered, it's courteous to bring a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates.)
- Never bring an uninvited guest.
- If you're sick, don't come.
- Be considerate and congenial.
- Wipe your feet on the doormat before entering the home.
- Use coasters.
- Take no uninvited tours of your host's home.
- Do not smoke inside the house unless you've asked the permission of everyone present.
- Inform the host of any accidents; don't hide or camouflage spills or breakage.
- Don't eat and run -- stay and enjoy the party. A good rule of thumb calls for lingering about an hour after dinner.
- Thank the host as you leave, and follow up promptly with a phone call or a quick note.
