Susan Meacham, owner of Varieties Floral Designs, offers the following tips for successfully arranging cut flowers:

    1. Hold stems, especially those of roses, underwater to cut; this prevents air bubbles from moving up the stem. Cuts should be angled, not straight across.

    2. Vases don't have to be fancy. Use found bottles from flea markets -- even drink coolers (figure A).

    3. Use a variety of foliage for full effect (figure B) and to create a border or frame for your "garden." Angle some of the foliage plants down from the basket's rim.

    4. Place moistened floral foam (oasis) in the center of the basket or container.

    5. Start the arrangement in the center. Work with blooms in odd-numbered groups -- 3, 5, 7 or 9.

    6. Layer the foliage to frame the basket.
