Jeanne Benedict prepares a table display for a holiday party blending Christmas and Hanukkah themes.
Q: What tips can you give me for a holiday party that incorporates both Hanukkah and Christmas decorations and food.

A: (from DIY's entertaining expert, Jeanne Benedict) It's a wonderful idea to combine Hanukkah and Christmas into one big, happy party. Here are some basic decorating suggestions, and a serving idea for a traditional Hanukkah dish that works great for any occasion.

    Potato Latkes

Here's a recipe for potato pancakes -- or latkes (figure A) -- made from regular potatoes, as well as sweet potatoes. They're served with several toppings.

    • Peel and grate three regular-sized potatoes. We used a food processor to simplify this step.

    • Place the grated potatoes in a mixing bowl and add:

      1/2 cup of grated onion
      1/4 cup of flour
      1 tsp salt
      1 tsp pepper

    • Stir these ingredients, then add two beaten eggs (figure B). Continue stirring the mixture.

    • Repeat these steps separately to create the same mixture, but substituting sweet potatoes for regular potatoes.

    • Once you have both mixtures stirred well, heat some canola or vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. For a slightly different flavor, you can use olive oil.

    • Carefully place heaping-teaspoon-sized dollops of the potato mixtures into oil (figure C). Use caution, because the hot oil may splatter.

    • As the potato pancakes begin to brown, carefully flip them over (figure D) and cook them on the other side until golden brown.

    • Note: Since sweet-potatoes contain more sugar, they may brown more quickly.

    • Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.

    • Offer apple sauce, curried sour cream and chutney as toppings.

    Artichoke Puffs

Another great recipe for your holiday party are artichoke puffs, made in a biscuit shell, served with minced red and green-pepper garnish. Here's how to make it.

    • In a mixing bowl, add the following ingredients (figure E):

      1/2 cup of mayonnaise
1 cup of grated Swiss and parmesan cheese
      1/2 cup canned artichoke, chopped
      1/2 cup green onion, chopped

    • Mix the ingredients thoroughly.

    • To create tart-shells, separate layers of uncooked commercially prepared flaky-style biscuits and use the individual layers to line the molds of a biscuit tin. The biscuit dough is easiest to work with when it's cold

    • Scoop teaspoon-sized dollops of the artichoke mixture into the individual shells (figure F).

    • Bake at 425 degrees for about 8 minutes until they are golden brown.

    • Top with minced red and green bell peppers and serve on a tray with green and red garnishes or decoration (figure G)

    Decorating Ideas

For decorating for your party, make use of the silvers and blues of the Hanukkah colors (figure H) and the golds and reds of Christmas (figure I)cb. Incorporate these into your table decorations using clear vases.

We created a decorative table display right on the kitchen island by covering the island top (once the stove had cooled completely) with a sheet of plywood, then covered the plywood with a decorative tablecloth. Birch branches spray-painted white were placed in a vase and decorated with gold, silver and white ornaments. Strands of gold, red and blue beads were placed among the serving dishes on the table.

The serving tray with the potato latkes was decorated using the Hanukkah-themed colors and ornaments (figure J).
