If you tend to avoid pool parties because you don't feel comfortable wearing a swimsuit, fashion stylist Toni Pickett has several tips for keeping cool and looking great. As a consultant for Macy's department store, Pickett has had the opportunity to produce many runway shows, and her best advice is to stick to the classics. She believes that cut-off shorts and tank tops are not quite appropriate for adults and says she would rather be overdressed at a party than underdressed. Since pool parties tend to start during the day and go on until the air has cooled, Pickett recommends dressing in layers or including a wrap around your waist to be prepared for cooler temperatures. She illustrates how a classic look can keep you comfortable and fashionable at your next pool party (figure A). - A short skirt with a pretty tank top will keep you cool during the day, and you can wrap a sweater around your waist without losing that classic look.
- Black pants with a white tank and jacket will carry you through the late afternoon and into the evening.
- You can't go wrong with a pair of chinos and a short-sleeved shirt for a menswear take on poolside fashion.
- A spaghetti-strapped black floral dress is appropriate for a younger woman and can be worn for a night on the town after the party.
- For full-figured women, Pickett suggests a long, slimming paisley skirt with a simple t-shirt to match. Shorts should be avoided if you are concerned about your weight.
- One-piece dresses work really well at pool parties, as a swimsuit can be worn underneath.
- Hats are always fashionable, especially when you are spending an afternoon in the sun and need protection for your eyes and skin.
Pickett adds that casual dress can be highly interpretive when suggested on a party invitation. Denim shorts and t-shirts may be fine if you know the host really well and what kind of party it is. Otherwise, stick to the classics, and you'll feel comfortable no matter what.
