Instead of spending a lot of money at a print shop, consider making your own invitations for your next party. Your guests will appreciate the personal touch that each handmade piece of art delivers. Kellene Giloff, the owner and publisher of Stamper's Sampler magazine, joins host Heidi Bohay to discuss the basics of decorating with rubber stamps. Creating your own party invitations with rubber stamps is a fun and economical way to express your individuality, says Giloff. With the wide variety of stamps and inks available, you can easily achieve stunning results. Expand upon your party theme to include other matching accessories: place cards, plates, paper cups, and napkins (figure A). Small gift bags and party favors can also be coordinated with the theme so that a very few stamps will carry you throughout your whole party. Before you get started, Ciloff says to have these basic tools on hand: - Good cardstock paper
- A variety of rubber stamps and ink pads
- Coloring pencils and markers
- Cutting tools, such as a utility knife and scissors
- A ruler to help cut straight lines
- Glue
- Foam mounting tape to create dimension
- Raffia or ribbon.
Once you have these basic tools, the fun really begins. Re-create the creativity of childhood by letting your imagination go wild! Use coloring pencils or markers to color in the stamped images. Various other materials can also be used to produce unique artistic expressions: - Use colored copies of magazine photos as seals and accents.
- Computer images and small objects around the house can also be transformed into works of art. The possibilities are endless.
Finally, make sure that all the pertinent information is included on the invitations. Your guests will need to know the time, place, date and RSVP number for the party. A creative invitation signals how much fun a party will be, so if you're a little doubtful of your own artistic abilities, consult a book on rubber stamping for starter ideas. Making your own invitations can seem like a daunting task, but the extra effort will be well appreciated.
