Materials:
6' table Bright colored tablecloth 3 grass beach mats Assorted colors of craft paint Craft brushes Nuts, bolts and screws Two 6' and 1" x 3" pieces wood Four 3' and 1" x 3" pieces wood Drill with screwdriver attachment Foam core Three 3 x 4' thatched palm panels Hot glue gun Glue sticks Scissors Knife Staple gun Strings of party lights Four 5-gal. buckets Sand Two 7' bamboo poles Two 5' bamboo poles - First, you need to build the frame for the hut (figure A).
- The taller bamboo poles go in the back of the hut and the shorter bamboo poles go in the front and this will create the slope for the roof. The frame of the roof consists of two 6-foot 1 x 3's. One will be attached horizontally to the front of the 5-foot bamboo poles and the other will be attached horizontally to the back side of the 7-foot bamboo poles.
- Drill a hole about an inch from the top of the bamboo poles. Use nuts and bolts to attach it to the roof (figure B).
- Nail two 1 x 3's to the sides of the roof and then nail two more across the top of the roof (figure C).
- Paint the 5-gallon buckets in a fun Caribbean style (figure D). Fill these with sand and place the bamboo poles in the buckets. They will provide stability to the tiki hut.
- Cut a piece of foam core to fit the top of the hut. Staple it to the frame and then staple the three 3 x 4 palm panels to the top of the foam core (figure E).
- Use the craft paint to paint tropical designs onto the 3 grass beach mats (figure F).
- Staple strings of fun party lights around the frame of the hut.
- Place a bright colored tablecloth over the table and then drape a grass beach mat across the center of the table with the long ends hanging down the front.
Expert Tip: Foam core is a lightweight product that is very easy to use in place of wood. It is very light and fairly inexpensive and easier to keep on hand than plywood. Note: You can use wood instead of bamboo poles if you prefer. The bamboo poles give it a more authentic look. For the roof you can use bamboo shades or hula skirts instead of the palm panels.
