    Materials:

    8' of cotton blend fabric
    Glue gun and glue sticks
    Water
    Cream colored latex water-based paint
    Roller brush
    Paper tape
    Several shades of fabric paint
    Brushes
Bricks, stones or books to keep banner flat while drying

    1. For our banner we used duck cloth. First you prime the cloth with a light color (we used gray) using the roller and then weight it down on all corners with bricks, etc. so that the cloth will not shrink up.

    2. Once the paint has dried, roll on your background color (figure A).

    3. After the paint has dried, you need to cut the corners. Draw a square with a diagonal through it. Cut the top triangle off and slice through the bottom triangle (figure B). When folded, these form the pockets for the elbow joints.

    4. Fold over the cloth and hot glue just the edges (figure C). By gluing just the edges, you allow room for the PVC pipe to go through.

    5. Once the glue dries, you need to think about your design. You can draw your design by freehand or you could make template letters on a computer. We used paper tape to make a border around our banner.

    6. Paint your letters and decorate the edges and center of the banner using foam stamps, etc. (figure D).

Expert Tip: Kristi Lawlor, Craft Expert for JoAnn, Etc., says that when you make a banner you need to keep in mind where the guests will be seeing the banner. If they will be seeing it from the street, your letters need to be much larger than they would be if the guests will be seeing it close up. You can also use a computer printer to make different sizes of letters. This way you can pin it to the banner and look at it from the guests' standpoint and see how large or small the letters need to be.
