Deborah Fabricant's ideas for creative invitations are sure to draw a crowd. A few materials, a party theme and a lighthearted approach are all you need.

    Materials:

6" x 9" pocket fold (or square or rectangular envelopment)
    Fluted backing to fit
    Translucent vellum sheet
Velveteen paper (or felt or cardstock of choice)
    Raffia
    Translucent outer envelopment
    Single-hole punch
    Double-sided tape

    1. Decide party time, date and theme before writing text for the invitation.

    2. Determine size and shape of invitation.

    3. Lay out text and any graphics on the computer. Use laser printer to print the insert and invitation on translucent vellum.

    4. Cut printed pieces to size.

    5. Punch holes in printed vellum invitation and in fluted backing cards to match.

    6. Align the pieces, feed raffia through the holes and tie (figure A).

    7. Tape fluted card to center of pocket folder with double-sided tape (figure B).

    8. If desired, cut velveteen paper into desired theme shapes and tape to panels of pocket fold or envelopment.
