Felisa Bayze, President of Package Design Studios, joins Heidi Bohay to show how balloons can be used to decorate any event and create an exciting atmosphere that invites a fun party attitude. Balloons are inexpensive and colorful decorating tools, and by renting a tank of helium you can create beautiful sculptures that will mark your party as the main event.

When working with balloons, Bayze suggests using a large size, at least 14 inches, and to leave enough room when filling with helium to allow for expansion in the heat. One way to create a stunning sculpture is to attach the filled balloons to topiary frames or aluminum tubing. Another way is to form balloon clusters and anchor them with strong, monofilament fishing line to create your own original shapes. Bayze demonstrates how to use these basic building blocks to form an astonishing arch, perfect for any outdoor gathering.

    1. Anchor one end of the fishing line to a post and the other end to the helium tank. This will be the backbone running through the entire sculpture, so use as much line as you need to form the arch size you desire.

    2. Fill two balloons with helium and tie each end in a knot.

    3. Connect the two balloons by holding one in each hand by the tie, placing one under the opposite arm, and tying the two ends together (figure A).

    4. Repeat the last two steps with 2 more balloons.

    5. Combine the 2 pairs to form a cluster. Simply push the pairs together and twist around each other (figure B).

    6. Slide the balloon cluster onto the fishing line, and secure it by wrapping the line around each balloon in the cluster (figure C).

    7. Continue adding clusters to the fishing line in the order you choose. For this rainbow arch, use an equal number of clusters for each of the colors.

    8. When you are done securing the last balloon cluster to the line, anchor the ends to cinder blocks. Wrap duct tape around the rough spots that will come into contact with the line so the helium structure won't break loose and fly away.

Once you have mastered the art of making balloon clusters, you can create a multitude of forms that will entertain your guests. Lily pads can be created by attaching the fishing line to duct tape-covered bricks that sit on the bottom of your pond or pool. Make sure the line is long enough to allow your sculpture to sit on the surface of the water
