The best party invitations create a sense of excitement about the event before your guests ever set foot in your house. For a luau, consider a bottle with a map inside (you'll have to hand-deliver the bottles). Or write the party information on a piece of cardboard, cover it with fishnet, and weave in a few plastic fishes, crabs and shells. Decorations Tiki lamps and fishnet at the door help set a tropical theme. Tropical flowers throughout the house provide bright colors and wonderful scents and create an exotic atmosphere. Seashells look great everywhere, including the bathroom. Fill fishbowls with party favors, flowers or floating candles. A beautiful buffet can contribute to your decor too (figure B). It's a perfect way to feed your guests efficiently, and it allows you, the host, a chance to enjoy the party. Tropical flowers make a dramatic centerpiece. (Tip: Decide on the centerpiece after you know how much room you'll have on the table.) If you offer alcoholic beverages, serve them in coconuts or tall glasses with umbrellas. Stick to the theme: rum punch or margaritas are always a hit at a luau. Make sure to offer nonalcoholic punch as well. Consider hiring musicians to provide traditional luau music. If you do, keep a broom handle handy for a spontaneous limbo.
