The film strip photo display is cleverly created from cardboard boxes, black paper, white tape and enlarged copies of treasured photographs. Balloons placed atop the stack add the finishing touch.

Q: I'm in charge of our family reunion. What kind of theme and decorations can I create to make the event memorable for everyone?

A: Reunions are a great time to catch up with relatives. Home movies and photographs are often a great part of these celebrations -- so we're using that as inspiration for our theme.

    Movie Clapboard

This is a great way to welcome guests and announce the party.

    1. Cut black foam core to desired size.

    2. Use a craft knife to score front and back of foam core and accordion fold a few times. Use thin and thicker pieces of white tape to create white diagonal lines and hold the pieces together.

    3. Use hot glue to adhere the accordion-folded section to the foam core base.

    4. Create horizontal and vertical lines and adhere small white adhesive letters to the board so that it resembles an actual movie clapboard (i.e., roll, scene, take). Use chalk to write family information on the board.

    Filmstrip Photo Display

    1. Cover 4-5 cardboard boxes with black paper, wrapping gift style.

    2. Enlarge favorite family photos to 8" x 10" size and adhere to the front of boxes (one per box).

    3. Add small strips of white tape along side the photo, alternating with sections of black to create a filmstrip effect.

    4. Stack the boxes vertically.

    Additional Ideas

    • Consider renting a popcorn cart for an authentic "at the movies" touch.
    • Cover your buffet table with black and white or black and silver cloth. Intermingle old cameras between the food and add the clapboard to the back of the table.
