In this segment of Major League Remodel workshop, host Denny Janson gives some tips for creating frame displays and displaying sports momentos and photographs as wall decoration.
Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with power tools and pneumatic tools. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation, when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions.
Baseball Bat Wall-Hangings
Materials Regulation-size baseball bats Cordless drill; screwdriver attachment Wood screws Framed prints, photos or shadow-boxes - One novel idea that's ideal for displaying framed baseball photos and other framed or shadow-box display items is to mount the smaller frames on actual baseball bats (figure A). This technique provides a fresh approach for wall hangings, and a theme in keeping with the baseball treasures you wish to display on your walls.
- Simply secure the bats to the wall with wood screws, and hang the frames directly onto the bats with frame hooks. For a more permanent display, you can attach wood frames onto the bats using wood screws.
Frame with Baseball-Card Border
Do you have a bunch of old baseball cards that you don't know what to do with, but you don't want to discard? Consider affixing them to a large wood frame, then using that frame to display matted baseball photos or art. Materials Hammer Framing boards Decorative wood corners Wood biscuits Woodworker's glue Matted photos Glass, pre-cut to size Glazing points Baseball cards Spray-mount adhesive
- To create the "baseball card frame," you may want to begin by custom building your own wood frame. Cut 1x4 framing boards (with pre-cut rabbets) to the appropriate lengths, and secure them together to form a frame using decorative corner blocks and wood biscuits (figure B).
- Once the frame is assembled, stain it in a wood-stain of your choice.
- Apply baseball cards to the flat surfaces of the frame using spray-mount adhesive (figure C), attaching cards all the way around the frame.
- Once the adhesive has dried, flip the frame over and carefully insert a pre-cut sheet of glass in the frame.
- Place pre-matted photographs, with the mat cut to the appropriate dimensions onto of the glass (figure D).
- Place a pre-cut wood backing into position in the back of the frame (figure E) and secure it with window-glazing points (figure F).
- Once the glass, matted prints and backing are all secured, your baseball-card frame is ready to hang (figure G).
