Once the rabbets and mitered corners have been cut, the frame is joined together. There are two options for securely joining the frame: glue and nails (with picture-frame clamps used to hold the pieces snugly during the drying process), or glue alone (used with belt clamps). Glue, Finishing Nails and Picture-Frame Clamps Materials: Woodworkers glue 4 picture-frame clamps (less than $10 each) Drill with small bit Small finishing nails - Dry-fit frame together to check positioning and measurements (figure A). Use picture-frame clamps (figure B) to hold in place.
- If frame corners fit well, remove one piece from the clamps.
- Apply woodworkers glue to inside surfaces of corners (a minimal amount of glue will be needed due to the porosity of the end grain). Reposition piece and clamp into place.
- Repeat for all other sides.
- Predrill a tiny hole on the corner edge into mitered corner (figure C).
- Tap finishing nail into hole and repeat technique for each corner.
Glue and Belt Clamps Materials: Woodworkers glue Web/belt clamp Tape measure or yardstick - Apply glue to inner surfaces of mitered corners.
- Position pieces into place and wrap web clamp around entire frame to hold firmly as it dries (figure D).
- Use tape measure or ruler to measure frame diagonally. Measurements from corner to corner should be equal.
