Once the back section and posts have been assembled, the shelves are cut and a plate groove is added.

The Arts and Crafts Plate Rack pattern in Bruce Johnson's demonstration was featured in the Summer 1998 issue of American Woodworker magazine. For ordering information, go to the Resources list below and click on "Arts and Crafts Plate Rack."

    Materials:

    1 piece of 3/4" x 4 3/8" x 47" oak (for bottom shelf)
    1 piece of 3/4" x 2 5/8" x 44 5/8" oak (for top shelf)
    1 piece of 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 46 7/8" oak (for plate rail)
    Pencil
    Tape measure
    Band saw
Table saw or radial-arm saw with dado blades
    Drill
    3/8" drill bit
    Wooden dowels
    Wooden dowel centers
    Woodworker's glue
    Clamps
    Decorative brad (optional)

    1. Begin by measuring and marking for notches on back surface of each shelf (the notch will accommodate the post).

    2. Use band saw to cut notches on both ends of the shelf (figure A). Repeat for other shelf.

    3. Use dado blade to cut narrow plate groove on top surface of both shelves. The groove will continue all the way to the edges on top -- where the bracket prevents the plates from falling off. On the second shelf, however, the groove should stop about 2" away from the edge of the shelf.

    4. Set dado blade 1/4" wide and 1/4" deep and cut grooves.

    5. Dry-fit shelves onto rack.

    6. Mark and drill holes two 3/8" holes into each bracket (figure B ).

    7. Place a pointed dowel center into the holes (figure C).

    8. Press shelf onto dowel center to make tiny impressions (figure D). Using impressions as a guide, drill two corresponding 3/8" holes in the end of each shelf (figure E).

    9. Apply woodworker's glue to the holes in the ends of shelf and to dowels, and tap dowels into the holes.

    10. Apply glue to bracket holes and attach to shelves (figure F)

    11. Use long clamp to secure until dried.

    12. Add plate rail in front of top shelf. Nail to front of posts (figure G). Attach decorative brads to the front of the rail (if desired) to add an authentic arts and crafts detail.
