Once the wooden has been planed and cut for the rabbets and lap joints, it's time to assemble the back section and add the posts.

The Arts and Crafts Plate Rack pattern in Bruce Johnson's demonstration was featured in the Summer 1998 issue of American Woodworker magazine. For ordering information, go to the Resources list below and click on "Arts and Crafts Plate Rack."

    Materials:

    2 pieces of 7/8" x 2 1/2" x 25" oak
Table saw or radial-arm saw with dado blade
    Pencil
    Bar clamps
    Tape measure
    Nail gun with nails

    1. Begin by cutting posts to correct dimensions. Sand to round the edges of each post.

    2. Measure and mark edge for groove on post in which the rabbets will be inserted. Use dado blade to cut groove on inner edge, 1/4" wide and 1/2" deep (figure A). Repeat for other post.

    3. Align groove and rabbets and push together (figure B).

    4. Use a bar clamp to secure (figure C).

    5. Check measurements of all corner and edges for alignment. To doublecheck, measure diagonally from corner to corner (figure D). If measurements in both directions are the same, then all corners are perfectly square.

    6. Use nail gun to add one nail per rabbet joint to secure pieces.
