Once the pieces have been assembled, it's time to select and apply a finish. Because walnut was selected -- which tends to be dark -- a water-based product or oil finish is ideal. Penetrating wood oil or water-based finish
Paint and stain brush (use synthetic bristles for a water-based product)
Soft, absorbent cloth
- Begin by removing any visible pencil marks with eraser.
- If using oil, apply liberal coat to entire shelf surface (figure A).
- Allow the oil to penetrate a few minutes, then use soft cloth to absorb excess (figure B).
