Once the brackets have been mounted, the shelf top and decorative valance are added. The Swedish Wall Shelf pattern in Bruce Johnson's demonstration was featured in the February 2000 issue of American Woodworker magazine. Materials: Top shelf and valance Assembled brackets and back panel 7-5/8" wooden spacer Pencil Clamp Screwdriver and screws Wood glue Spring clamps Wall hanger - Loosen clamp on brackets and spacer. Reposition spacer upright (figure A) so horizontal edge is even with top edge of brackets. Tighten clamp on repositioned spacer and brackets.
- Place shelf on top of brackets and spacer. Center and clamp into place.
- Use pencil to mark inner and outer vertical edges of the bracket's top edge on underside of top shelf (figure B). Repeat for other bracket.
- Loosen clamp and flip top shelf. Center in place.
- Use drill to countersink holes within both sets of vertical lines (figure C). Position first hole about 2" from straight edge; position second hole 2-3" from the first. Use screwdriver to tighten screws through holes into shelf. Repeat technique to secure opposite bracket to top shelf.
- Apply wood glue to straight edge of valance (figure D). Center valance piece under top shelf, against the brackets. Use spring clamps to hold in place as glue dries (figure E).
- Using drill, countersink hole into back edge of shelf directly above line of screws.
- Secure hanger to the shelf with screw and tighten into place (figure F). Repeat technique to add additional hanger.
