Jean Gorman uses paper, paint and wood to frame the beauty of the beach. Materials: Medium wooden frame with 2" borders Primer/sealer 1" or 1 1/2" foam and bristle brushes Pale beechwood stain (optional) Stir stick Lint-free cloth White acrylic paint Plastic container Flat hanging hook Medium steel wool Hammer Cutting mat Craft knife Watercolor paper Handmade paper Glue Medium gray and rust-colored pastel chalk Gauze (optional) Kraft paper Cutting board Pencil Starfish - Remove cardboard backing and glass from frame. Prime frame's surface, front and back. Apply a coat of pale stain if desired and allow to dry.
- Pour a little white paint into plastic container. Thin paint with almost equal amount of water and brush onto frames. Allow to dry thoroughly, then use steel wool to remove most of the paint and create a "weathered" appearance.
- Nail hanger to the back of the frame.
- Place watercolor paper on cutting surface. Place cardboard backing on watercolor paper and use craft knife to cut paper to same size and shape as backing (figure A).
- Tear thin strip of handmade paper (about 1" wide) to same length as the width of the watercolor paper. Brush thin coat of glue on back of handmade paper and place on watercolor paper rectangle (figure B). Apply a line of gauze if desired.
- Trace along the torn edge of the handmade-paper strip with gray chalk and blend with finger. Follow by applying the rust chalk in the same manner (figure C).
- Apply small amount of glue to tips of starfish arms and position as desired along the edge of the handmade paper. Repeat with other starfish and allow to dry.
- Place kraft paper on cutting surface and cut around the cardboard shape. Cut a hole or opening in the center of the kraft-paper rectangle about 1/2" to 1/4" from the edge to create a border (figure D).
- Finally, place the kraft-paper border in the frame and position the starfish collage face down over the border. Add the cardboard backing and assemble the rest of the frame backing.
