If you want to decorate your walls, but you're tired of pictures, why not install a wall box? These simple boxes add an interesting flair by providing a place to display various knickknacks. Start by cutting out a few templates of various sizes to help you decide how large your wall box should be. Choose a size, and use the template as a guide for building the box. After you determine your measurements, cut the sides of the wall box with a miter saw (figure A) or table saw. Cut the top and bottom pieces at the same time so that they'll be equal in length. Do the same for the left and right pieces. Glue the edges of the box together (figure B), and clamp the corners in place with picture-frame clamps (figure C). For added support, nail the corners together with finish nails. After the boxes are assembled, you can sand and stain them. Because the wall boxes can be heavy, you should use wall anchors to hang them (figure D). Attach keyhole mounting brackets to the back of the box (figure E), and hang the box on the wall (figure F).
