An easy-to-build gallery rail provides a great way to display a collection of family photos or favorite art. In this segment, a 4' gallery rail was centered on the wall 52" up from the floor, with a 3' rail centered 15" above it. Determine the length and placement of your gallery rail to best suit your space.

    Materials:

    1" x 2" pine board
    Decorative molding
    Level
    Miter box
    Saw
    Safety glasses
    Drill
    Hammer
    Nails
    3/4" brads
    Nail set
    Medium-grit sandpaper
    Tack cloth
    Stud finder
    Wood stain
    Clean rags
    Wood glue
    Wood putty

    1. Determine the length and placement of the gallery rail.

    2. Wearing safety glasses, use a miter box to cut the pine board and molding to the desired length (figure A).

    3. Use a level to draw a straight line on the wall where the rail will be hung ( figure B).

    4. Use a stud finder to mark the beginning and end of each wall stud (figure C).

    5. Hold the pine board in place on the wall, and mark the center of each stud. These marks show the placement for the predrilled hole necessary for nailing the rail to the wall.

    6. Drill a hole at each spot marked on the board.

    7. Lightly sand the board to remove any rough edges or splinters.

    8. Wipe the board with a tack cloth to remove the dust.

    9. Dip a rag in golden oak stain, and apply to the board and the molding (figure D). A variety of colorful accent stains are also available (figure E).

    10. Attach the 1" by 2" to the wall by hammering in a nail at every predrilled hole.

    11. Apply wood glue along the front edge of the shelf.

    12. Nail the molding onto the front edge using 3/4" brads.

    13. Carefully countersink the nails with a nail set and a hammer (figure F).

    14. Fill in the holes with wood putty, and wipe away the excess with a rag.
