When is a toilet-paper holder not a toilet-paper holder? When it's a towl bar! Don't be afraid to think outside the box when you're redecorating a room.

Replacing the outdated and dangerous torpedo lights, this bronze-patinated fixture adds charm and elegance to the bathroom.

The bathroom's mirrors were boring: simply attached to the walls, they had no designer touches, and their silvering was wearing off (figure A). Golden replaced them with two mirror panels, framed in molding (which was then painted white) and remounted on the walls. The resulting look added a touch of designer savvy to the bathroom (figure B).

Another problem with the room was the fact that the sinks are in the front, under the windows, so a person using one of them can't look at his or her reflection in a mirror. To solve this dilemma, Golden used two drapery finials and copper-colored wired ribbon to hang a smaller mirror on either side of the sinks.

Several smaller details in the bathroom had to be changed for reasons both practical and aesthetic: the faucet handles, the cabinet knobs, the light fixtures. Fixes such as these tend to be among the easiest and most cost-effective for any homeowner to carry out.

The Bare Facts: Use warm colors in the bathroom with accessories and paint to counteract the coldness of the tile and the bathroom fixtures.
