One of the keys to successful onion cutting is to slice the onion in half lengthwise.

The keys to tearless onion chopping are a sharp knife and a simple trick: Cut off the stem end and then cut the onion in half lengthwise. Remove the skin and make parallel cuts across the onion -- but do not cut into the onion. This helps hold the onion together and also ensures that the least amount of tear-inducing fumes are released. Finish with a series of slices, and you have a perfectly sliced onion.

We at DIY believe all of the recipes from All in Good Taste are accurate and reliable, but since we have not tested them personally, we can claim no responsibility if the desired results are not achieved.
