You have to start with live clams. Make sure they are closed tight. It lets you know they are alive and still healthy. If they are opened, discard them. Cook and steam them down and they will open up. You should not have to fight to get into a clam. Once open, put in a cup of broth and clean them off. They are good to eat with melted butter.
