You can turn backpacks and buckets into terrific totes. Picnics are great fun and we have gone beyond baskets -- you can use backpacks, buckets and pails. A backpack would go lovely with a chenille throw. Just throw in a thermos of coffee, mugs, and tins cans with your food items (figure A). Or you could make a wine picnic backpack with clear plastic containers with dip and salsa, crackers, plastic wine glasses, etc. (figure B).
A great idea is to take the plastic buckets, large for family and smaller for individual or paint cans. Paint your own design on them and make them really fun. Have the children decorate their own bucket to take on a hike. You can use latex spray paints and then decorate with the paint pens (figure C).
