  • Jaffel -- The Australian Sandwich
  • From "All in Good Taste"
    episode AGT-111
    advertisement

A jaffel is type of sandwich grilled over a campfire or barbecue pit in a two-handled sandwich toaster, which can be purchased at a camping supply store. If you are buying a new one, season the metal first by heavily coating with a high quality, unsalted vegetable oil and leaving it in the hot coals for at least one hour.

Our cook made three types of jaffel -- listed below. Try any ingredients that sound good to your family. One idea is to let your children or guests assemble their own from an array of possible ingredients.

    Ham and Cheese

    Ingredients:

    2 pieces of bread, buttered
    1 slice of ham
    1 slice favorite cheese
    1 slice onion
    1 slice tomato

    Turkey Mango

    Ingredients:

    1/2 cup corn bread batter
    1 slice turkey
    1 slice favorite cheese
    1/4 cup mango chutney
    Honey (to taste)

    Banana Pineapple

    Ingredients:

    2 pieces bread, buttered
    1 banana sliced lengthwise
    Fresh or canned pineapple
    Brown sugar (to taste)

    Preparation:

Assemble your ingredients like a sandwich with the buttered side out.* Place inside the sandwich toaster and cinch closed, trimming away excess bread or crust. For best results, thrust directly into hot coals. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, checking every minute or so for doneness.

*For turkey mango, place batter in each half of preheated iron, then add ingredients. Allow to cook open-faced for a minute or two, then close and cook as usual.
