    Figure A

Nancy Silverton, co-owner of La Brea Bakery, says that sandwiches are her favorite party food because they are as fun to make as they are to eat. The breads at La Brea are homemade and are available in a wide variety of healthy flavors. And since the filling ingredients can be purchased at the store, you don't have to spend all day in the kitchen.

Nancy says that the secret of a delicious and healthy sandwich is what is inside. For example, this Ricotta and Roasted Red Pepper sandwich on walnut bread has a rich flavor but contains very little salt (figure A). If a salty taste is desired, Nancy uses a small amount of a drier, harder type of cheese called ricotta salata.

She reminds us that the party is for you as much as your guests, so be sure to take all the necessary steps to guarantee your own enjoyment.
