Q: How can I give a fresh look to some old table linens?

A: (from expert crafter Debbie Stapely) Consider turning your ordinary table linens into something special with these easy appliques. Here's how.

    Materials:

    Plain table linens
    Decorative fabric
    Sewing machine
    Iron
    Scissors
    Iron-on fusible web
    Straight pins

    Steps:

    • Once you've selected the table linens you'd like to applique, select a decorative fabric with a pattern that complements your linens. For our demonstration, we chose a floral pattern (figure A). This simplified the creation of the applique designs, because all that was required was cutting out the existing floral pattern (figure B).

    • An alternative would be to select an ornate pattern, and cut out shapes using plastic templates (figure C) such as those used for quilting.

    • You'll need to use iron-on fusible web for securing the appliques to the linen fabric. For attaching the fabrics together, the web will help stabilize the cutouts and make them more manageable and sturdy.

    • Follow the manufacturer's directions that come with your fusible web for ironing it onto the back of the applique material (figure D).

      • Tip: To make the job easier, attach the fusible web to a large section of your applique material before cutting out your shapes.

    • Once the webbing has adhered to the fabric, peel off the paper backing (figure E).

    • Once you have applied the fusible web and cut out your shapes, position them and attach them to the linen using straight pins (figure F).

      • Tip: For added stability, place and pin paper backing behind the linen material before sewing on the appliques. (Specially made paper for this purpose can be purchased in most fabric stores.) Most of the paper backing can be torn away once the appliques are sewn on. Any remaining paper fragments should come off when the linens are laundered.

    • Once you've positioned and pinned the cutouts as you want them, sew them onto the linen using a sewing machine (figure G). Set the machine for a short zigzag stitch, and sew carefully around the edge of the cutout (figure H).

    • When you need to stop and turn your fabric on the sewing machine, make sure that the needle is in the down position as you turn the material.

    • Continue around the edges until the cutout is sewn completely to the linen (figure I).

    • Remove the pins, and tear away the paper backing from the backside of the linen.

    • Repeat the steps for all of your cutouts to create beautifully appliqued linens that will complement your table setting (figure J).
