    Figure C

Fiber artist Christine Mariotti transforms a plain silk square into a fashion statement.

    Materials:

    22" white silk square, hemmed
Stretcher bars, 24" square or any adjustable silk-stretching frame
    Pushpins or prongs
Several colors of dye, mixed medium strength (50 percent dye, 50 percent rubbing alcohol)
    3" foam brush
    Rubbing alcohol
    Cotton swabs
    Spray bottle
    Two small watercolor brushes
Gold gutta resist in small-tipped applicator

    1. Stretch the silk bandanna tightly on a frame, being careful not to put pins through the inside of the bandanna. Pin through the hemmed edge to camouflage holes.

    2. Pour dye mixture into a container large enough to accommodate a 3" foam brush. Cover the silk with broad horizontal strokes, slightly overlapping different colors (figure A). Let the dye dry completely.

    3. After the dye has dried, dip paintbrush in rubbing alcohol. Tap against handle of another brush to "spatter" silk's surface and create an interesting effect (figure B). You could alternately spray the alcohol over the surface or create spots by dabbing it directly onto the surface with a cotton swab.

    4. Allow silk to dry, then apply a whimsical pattern of gold lines with gold gutta (figure C).

    5. When gutta has dried, layer tissue paper over the bandanna and set the pattern with a dry iron on medium high. Iron lightly for about 1 minute. After the color has set, the bandanna will be hand-washable and dry-cleanable.
