Give an old table a new look by covering it with fabric. DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden explains this simple no-sew makeover of a plain Parsons table. Materials: Parsons table Fabric Decorative trim Spray adhesive Iron Scissors Craft knife and sharp blades Glue gun Optional: glass top - Choose a durable mediumweight to heavyweight material. We're using denim.
- Remove the table legs.
- Cut fabric to fit the legs by rolling each table leg along the fabric and adding 2" all the way around (figure A). Iron a narrow hem along one length of the fabric.
- Apply spray adhesive to the table leg and the back of the fabric. Center the leg on the fabric, and roll it along all four sides. Plan ahead to make sure the finished edge lands in the middle of the leg (figure B).
- Fold the fabric around the bottom of the leg as if you're wrapping a package, and hold it in place (figure C).
- Remove excess fabric at the top of the leg, cutting it even at the top of the leg with a craft knife. Use a sharp blade to ensure a clean cut.
- To cover the tabletop, cut a square of fabric large enough to cover the top and sides with an extra inch all around.
- Apply spray adhesive to the back of the fabric and the tabletop. Center the fabric on the tabletop and smooth in place. Fold the fabric down over the edges of the table, making a neat hospital fold at each corner (figure D).
- Remove the excess fabric at the table edge with a craft knife (figure E).
- Use a hot-glue gun to add trim or piping to the bottom edge of the tabletop to cover the seam and give a finished look.
- Reassemble the table and add a glass tabletop, if desired, to protect the surface from spills.
