Katie Nelson, formerly of Waverly Fabrics, introduces an offbeat decorating idea: slipcovers for shelves and bookcases. Katie says that the best aspect of this project is that slipcovered shelves don't need to be dusted as often. It's also an ideal method for coordinating colors and patterns in any area being remodeled. Materials:
Fabric Double-sized piece of wood Glue gun and hot glue Staple gun Fringe or cording - After selecting a fabric, determine the width and length of the designated shelf. Envisioning a shelf covered as though it were a wrapped gift, cut the fabric so the piece is large enough to cover the entire shelf, with some excess material on the sides and ends to fold under.
- Lay fabric wrong side up, and place the shelf in the center (figure A).
- Bring the fabric at each end of the shelf up and over. Staple (figure B).
- Bring the sides up, creating angled corners as though wrapping a package, and staple in place (figure C).
- Smooth edges, and add any decorative touches such as fringe or cording to the shelf. It is now ready to hang (figure D).
- Optional: To add a decorative piece of hanging fabric to the shelf, iron box pleats into a piece of fabric, and hot-glue it to the edge of the shelf (figure E).
